After 10 years as a custom finish and restoration shop, Wilkins Guitars moved into production initially as a subcontractor for Yamaha and then solely under the Wilkins name in 1997. He finished guitars for many artists, including the original bullseye Les Paul for Zakk Wylde, Eddie Van Halen’s “red cloud” Ripley guitar, and “marble rock swirl” guitar for James Hetfield. As the era of hot-rod guitars entered high gear, Wilkins Guitars became the shop of choice for custom guitar finishes. Wilkins left Schecter in 1983 and, after a brief stint at LA Guitar Works doing finish work and restorations, formed Wilkins Guitars in 1984 in Van Nuys, California. The emphasis upon quality was a central theme of his Schecter work experience, and Pat embodied that emphasis on the guitars he worked on for famous players such as Mark Knopfler, Keith Richards, and Pete Townshend. Wilkins spent six years at Schecter, first in the wood shop, then in assembly, and finally in the paint shop, learning all aspects of custom guitar production. While the music career never materialized, he was asked by Anderson to join him at Schecter Guitar Research as one of the original 10 employees. He worked during the day building speaker cabinets for Acoustic and jammed at night with his band, which included Tom Anderson on guitar. The hardware is the same, meaning a two-point Diamond Vintage Tremolo system makes the cut, as do Schecter locking tuners, a GraphTech XL Black TUSQ nut and two-way adjustable truss rod. Position four, meanwhile, sends the signal through the neck pickup in parallel. While positions one, three and five engage the humbuckers on their own and as a pair, position two partners the outer coils of both pickups for classic Tele twangs. These are wired to an equally minimalist control layout featuring master volume and tone controls, as well as a coil-splitting five-way selector switch. In terms of aesthetics, the PT Van Nuys is treated to additional vintage spice in the form of white body binding, and, under the hood, comes equipped with a pair of Schecter USA SuperRock Vintage humbuckers. Sporting the same luxurious ash body with Gloss Natural Ash colorway, the 25.5”-scale T-type six-string also features a roasted maple neck and 14”-radius fretboard, as well as 22 X-Jumbo frets and white side dot inlays. Lining up alongside the aforementioned model is the PT Van Nuys – a single-cut iteration of its double-cut sibling.
